About us

At ADORNO ORIGINALS INC., we create new works of art 100% handcrafted using the ancient techniques of repoussage. Our furniture and accessories are crafted with solid North American fine woods, especially treated for all types of climates, and carefully finished by hand. Our collection also includes beautiful candles, leather accessories, glass vases, icons and Talavera ceramics that will surely blend in with any décor. We have assembled a superb group of artisans, each with more than 15 years of experience in using the ancient techniques of repoussage. Their work is impeccable and exquisite. All products are adorned with tin appliqués. Decorations using silver and gold, instead of tin, are special orders. We guarantee our products will exceed your highest expectations. We design unique treasures to be cherished as heirlooms for many generations. Our merchandise has a Certificate of Authenticity and is numbered. Even if two pieces have the same design, they will never be identical because each artisan will emboss the metal differently each time. The result is a one-of-a-kind work of art. Our accent pieces will someday represent how we lived, who we are and what we dreamed to become.

ADORNO… a timeless tradition.

The Art du Repoussage

The art of working with metals flourished back in 3000 B.C. in Mesopotamia. Almost three thousand years later, its use extended to Europe where there emerged new forms of more sophisticated and elaborate designs. The Celts made wonders out of iron; Egyptians, from copper and gold; and Sumerians, from bronze. Persians made magnificent gold animal figurines; and Greeks, bronze and gold sculptures, to name a few. The "Art du Repoussage" comes from France. The verb "repousser" means to push back. It was during the Pre-Celt La Tène Culture (500 B.C. to 50 B.C.) when the Gallic mastered this art form. It is the art of decorating thin sheets of metal with a particular design, embossing it from the reverse side using special tools or the bare hand. The flat metal is transformed into a design raised in relief on the front. The Pre-Hispanic cultures of Mexico skillfully embossed metals, mainly gold. Most of the works were smelt into ingots of the different metals during the Spanish conquest and were lost. Some of the most extraordinary works in this art form were made in the 6th and 7th Century by members of the Greek-Orthodox Church in Eastern Europe, especially Greece and Russia. To this day, these icons are kept at Saint Catherine's Monastery in Mount Sinai. The most famous contemporary sculpture created in the technique of repoussé is the Statue of Liberty on Liberty Island in the Upper New York Bay. Some sections of the statue were formed by using copper repoussage. At ADORNO ORIGINALS, we keep alive the tradition of repoussage by using it to adorn contemporary furniture and accessories.
